EAN code OCR & data capturing
Enhance the effectiveness of your organization with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and data extraction. Process EAN codes safely and quickly with Klippa. Powered by machine learning.
What we can do with EAN codes
Our machine learning technology can automate many business processes requiring EAN codes via our APIs and SDKs.
EAN code scanning and recognition
Format conversion and scan quality improvement
EAN code extraction to text, CSV, XLSX or JSON
Data extraction on all types of documents
Classifying products with EAN codes
(Cross) validating EAN code data
EAN code field extraction
An image speaks more than a thousand words. Below is an example of the three steps our OCR engine takes to automatically extract EAN codes from documents.
Uploading file to the API
The first step is providing a picture or a PDF file containing an EAN code to our API. Usually this is done from a mobile app, email, FTP or web application.
Image to text using OCR
As soon as a picture or PDF has been received, each page is converted to a TXT file. In this step all the text from the document is extracted, but it is not yet structured.
Getting JSON output from the API
The Klippa Parser takes the TXT gained from the OCR in step 2 and converts it into structured JSON using machine learning. The JSON is then returned as output from the API. The EAN code is now extracted.
From here the field can easily be processed into your database. Whether you are processing EAN codes for wholesale ordering, accounting, insurances or other purposes, Klippa is here to help.
The image on the left is a simplified example of the JSON response.

What is an EAN code?
EAN stands for European Article Number. It’s a series of letters and numbers in a unique order that is used in global trade to identify a specific product.
The EAN code consists of the EAN, but is accompanied by a scannable barcode. These barcodes can be scanned and read by a computer (e.g. at the checkout of a retail store).
The most commonly used EAN standard is the thirteen-digit EAN-13. Since 2009, EAN codes have also been used to encode Global Trade Item Numbers (GTIN).
Other well-known EAN code variants are the EAN-8 (mainly used for small articles), EAN-14 (with a Packaging Indicator) and EAN-128 (also known as GS1-128).
Did you know that apart from EAN codes, Klippa OCR can scan other types of data fields, such as barcodes, QR codes, or even serial numbers? Contact us for more information.
