The first step is sending a residence permit file to our API. We support formats such as
.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .pdf, .doc, .docx, .xlsx, .heic, .webp and more. Usually, this is done from a mobile app, email, FTP, or web application.The image can be sent either cropped (without a background) or uncropped (with a background). If you send the document uncropped, our API will automatically crop the document.
To optimize the image quality, use our scanner SDK.
Transform image to TXT with OCR Residence Permit Engine
As soon as the document has been received, it is converted to a TXT file by our OCR reader. At this step, all the data from the residence permit is extracted into a text format, but not yet structured.
Receive JSON output from the OCR Residence Permit API
As the final step, the Klippa Parser takes the TXT which was gained from the previous step and converts it into structured JSON. The JSON is then returned as output from the Residence Permit OCR API.
From this point on, the residence permit can easily be processed in the database of your company. An extra option is to extract additional data like the signature or the picture.

How much does Residence Permit OCR cost?

Can Klippa process the MRZ from residence permits?
Most residence permits do not contain an MRZ code. That means Klippa extract the data directly from the fields on the document. If a residence permit contains an MRZ, Klippa is capable of reading and extracting it.
Can Klippa extract pictures and signatures from residence permits?
Both the pictures and signatures can automatically be recognized and extracted by Klippa. This is an optional feature that is used depending on the use case.
What residence permits are supported?
We are on our way to support all residence permits, worldwide. Currently we support European and American permits. If you have a specific type that you want to process, just reach out to us. Our machine learning models are very flexible and can easily adapt to new information.
How does Klippa check authenticity?
On top of traditional data extraction, Klippa offers an API and SDK for identity validation. This solution is called Klippa Identity Validation and is used for KYC and remote customer onboarding. It is more advanced than the OCR API and actually checks the quality of photos, validity of residence permits and numerous other issues. It also compares two independent selfies with the picture on the document, returning a matching score to validate if they are the same person.
Is Klippa’s residence permit processing GDPR compliant?
.All the services that Klippa offers are fully GDPR-compliant. By default, we use ISO-certified servers within the European Union for processing. If you are not located within the EU, we can also set up servers in a region of choice.
Next to that, a data processor agreement is in place. We do not store any of your or your customers’ data after processing.

Can Klippa convert residence permits to CSV, XLSX, XML or JSON?
Yes we can. Klippa takes pictures of residence permits, or their PDF equivalents, and converts them to readable text using OCR. From there we use machine learning to turn the text into structured data. Most of the time we use JSON for this, but depending on your preferences we can also convert residence permits to CSV, XLSX or XML.
