What is Advance Shipping Notice?
An Advance Shipping Notice (ASN) is a document that provides detailed information about a pending delivery. The purpose of an ASN is to notify the recipient when shipping occurs and provide physical characteristics about the shipment. In this way, the recipient can prepare him- or herself to accept delivery.
An ASN gives information about the date on which the parcel will be shipped, which items are being shipped, how many of each item is being shipped and physical characteristics such as the weight, number of boxes and type of packaging.
An ASN also tells the recipient which mode of transportation is being used and provides information about the carrier.

What types of ASNs are supported?
Depending on the EDI standard used, various terms are used to refer to an ASN. In the GS1 EANCOM standard, it is called the DESDAV (despatch advice message), whereas in the ANSI X12 EDI standard it is called the EDI 856 Advance Ship Notice, also sometimes simply called a Ship Notice/Manifest.
